November 2011

We urge you to come see 'Gasland'.
Oil is now $100 a barrel. Our present system is addicted to fossil fuels but we are running out fast. As a result the system is turning to more and more extreme measures to feed it’s habit.
In the UK a new method of Shale Gas xtraction method called hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) is being trialled in Blackpool.
Fracking has already become wide-spread in the United States, where it is destroying the environment and making people’s lives a misery in many places: toxic and radioactive water pollution, tap water you can set on fire, earthquakes ..... It has been banned in New York, New Jersey, Quebec, Friebourg and yet is still being trialled in the UK, where a third of our country sits on 'shales'. 400 wells are planned for Lancashire alone.

'Gasland' explores the issues via the experiences of its US filmmaker Josh Fox, who was asked to lease his land for drilling, and then embarked on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination.
